Alumni Spotlight, News

Following my time at Esperanza as part of Esperanza Academy’s class of 2016, I earned a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education & Teaching English as a Second Language from Penn State University. I then pursued a Master of Education in Reading/Writing/Literacy with Reading Specialist Certification at the University of Pennsylvania. Currently, I am enrolled in the Interdisciplinary Doctor of Education Leadership (EdD) program at Saint Joseph’s University, actively working on my dissertation titled, “A Case Study: The Impact of a Year-Long Professional Development in Structured Literacy Practices on Second-Grade Teachers’ Reading Instructional Knowledge and Practice.” I hold certifications as a K-4 Classroom Teacher, K-12 Reading Specialist, K-12 ESL Program Specialist, and K-12 School Principal in Pennsylvania.

My teaching journey unfolded primarily within the Pennsbury School District in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. I taught across elementary primary and intermediate grades and served as a reading specialist for grades K-5. At the district level, I served as equity liaison, supporting initiatives fostering inclusive learning environments for all students. Additionally, I coordinated Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) programs at the building level and conducted professional development sessions focusing on structured literacy practices and culturally relevant instructional methods. I also served as an Adjunct Professor of Education at Penn State University and proudly served our nation in the United States Army. Recently, I transitioned to an administrative role and currently serve as Assistant Principal at Simmons and Hallowell Elementary Schools within the Hatboro-Horsham School District. On a personal note, more recently, I have immersed myself in creating Spanish, Christian-based music that reflects my faith and beliefs. This journey has led me to international travels to countries such as Panama, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, and Puerto Rico, where I share these messages through music. Additionally, I contribute actively to youth ministry and leadership initiatives.

During my time at Esperanza Academy’s High School campus, I worked closely with the office administration as a student liaison. I was honored with the title “Voice of Esperanza” for my role as the official afternoon announcer and for representing Esperanza Academy as a student leader in significant events. I also served as student body President and News Editor of the award-winning student newspaper, the Esperanza Post. These experiences alongside the Esperanza Academy administrative staff ignited my passion for pursuing a career in educational leadership. As an administrator now, I often reflect on the lessons and moments with Esperanza Academy administration and instructional staff that have left a lasting mark on my journey. I continue to be inspired by the dedication of many teachers and High School administrators to the Esperanza Academy community, whose years of service stand as a testament to their authentic and inspiring legacy. The Esperanza community provided a crucial safety net for me as a North Philadelphia native, where I learned invaluable lessons and nuances related to leadership. I always look back with gratitude on the relationships I built during that time.

To current students, I offer this advice: embrace the opportunities before you and recognize that even the smallest beginnings prepare you for incredible life opportunities. Your choices shape your path, and these opportunities are where your journey begins. Your path does not start after your time at Esperanza; it begins now. What will you do with your path?
