It’s Hispanic/Latino Heritage Month, and today we are highlighting Javieris Marrero, a proud graduate of the Class of 2017! After earning her bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering at Temple University in 2021, she stepped into her role as a roadway analyst at Kimley-Horn, a private consulting firm. She is proud to be part of the 2% of Hispanic women working in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM).
As a roadway analyst, Javieiris has had the opportunity to work on railway designs and plan production. She recently moved to California to continue pursuing her dreams. She is looking forward to becoming a licensed engineer in California and being a part of the growing engineering community through organizations like WTS International (Women’s Transportation Seminar).
Reflecting on her time at EACS, Javieris shared how her experience played a significant role in shaping her future. Ms. Strunk, her freshman seminar teacher, encouraged her to enroll in the engineering program, which was led by Mr. Roberts. At that time, she didn’t know which path she wanted to pursue after high school, but the encouragement from her peers and teachers opened the door that led her to the career she is in today:
“The support and guidance I received at EACS helped build the foundation for where I am today. I want to thank Ms. Strunk and Mr. Roberts, who helped me understand the opportunities available in engineering and encouraged me to challenge myself in a field where women are still underrepresented.”
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, women make up 27% of workers in STEM, with Hispanic women comprising only 2% of that group. Being a part of that 2% makes Javieris proud of both her heritage and her accomplishments.
She shared, “It shows that representation matters and that there is space for Latinas to succeed in fields where we are often underrepresented. I hope my journey encourages other young women to pursue STEM careers with confidence and know that they belong in these spaces just as much as anyone else.”
Javieris encourages current students to be open to different opportunities that may arise and to trust themselves in whichever career path they take:
“Don’t be afraid to challenge yourself, ask questions, ask for help, and explore interests that may seem difficult at first. You might discover something that builds your confidence, shapes your future, and opens doors you never imagine.”
