Student Explores Construction Through MyWIC Summer Camp

Uncategorized

This summer, rising junior Joselyn Garcia gained hands-on construction experience at the Mentoring Young Women in Construction (MyWIC) South Camp, hosted by the NAWIC Philadelphia Foundation. MyWIC is a free camp for girls in grades 7–12, offering them real-world exposure to the construction industry, mentorship from experienced professionals, and opportunities to build confidence, teamwork, and practical skills.

“Mentoring young women inspires girls every day to remember that being a woman doesn’t mean you have limits—you can do anything,” Joselyn shared.

At the camp, Joselyn took on leadership roles in group projects and participated in a variety of activities, including exploring the electrical trade and learning the basics of brickwork. She discovered that construction is not just about physical labor, but also involves thoughtful planning, coordination, and strong communication across different roles.

Joselyn learned how to safely and effectively use tools, navigate job site operations, and communicate professionally with others. One of the highlights of her experience was the opportunity to speak directly with contractors, designers, and engineers who mentored campers throughout the program.

Her time at MyWIC had a meaningful impact on her future career goals, broadening her perspective as she learned about the many opportunities available within the construction industry, from working in the trades to managing projects behind the scenes.

“This made me realize that there are many paths to choose from. It’s best to try everything, discover your true passion, and not be afraid of failing.”

At Esperanza Academy, students connect with opportunities like MyWIC through the College and Career Office, their teachers, and their own initiative. College and Career counselors provide support every step of the way, from applying to programs to preparing for life after graduation. We are proud to see students like Joselyn expand their horizons and embrace the endless possibilities ahead!
